What makes you happy?

What makes you happy?

January 31, 2023

There’s a lot we could be talking about right now.

Markets.

Earnings.

Inflation.

Debt ceilings.

Interest rates.

Instead, how about we flip the script and talk about something both fun AND important?

What makes you happy?

Truly, unabashedly thrilled with your life.

How do you define "happiness," anyway?

Is it a temporary state? Is it a long-term sensation?

I’ve heard happiness called being mindful of small moments of joy.

I like this definition because it implies that happiness is a practice that we can cultivate and get better at.

Is there a special recipe for achieving happiness?

Maybe.

I’ll start. My personal recipe for happiness might be:

Purpose + Family + Friends + Fulfilling Work + Joy + Gratitude = Happiness

If I can get some of that into each day, I can call it a happy one.

I’ve also found that simple things bring me joy, even when I’m stressed or not feeling my best.

Smiles and laughter with the people I love.

Spending time in nature, breathing in the clean air and feeling the wind.

Losing myself in a great book.

A fantastic meal with friends I haven’t seen in a while.

What’s your personal recipe for happiness?

What simple things feed your soul?

Has your answer changed over time? Has it changed since 2020?

P.S. The market roller coaster is in full effect, and a lot of folks are looking for magic bullets or sure-fire solutions for the volatility. But there aren't any. It's time for patience and flexibility, not fads or secret ingredients.
