At last report, nearly six million Americans are under mandatory evacuation orders, making Hurricane Milton one of the largest evacuations in U.S. history. It’s a difficult number to even imagine as that number of evacuees is roughly the same as the population of Chicago and Houston combined. Millions more are opening their homes, their wallets, and their hearts to help family, friends, and strangers in this difficult time. When these Americans return home, a large part of the recovery may just be beginning. We may not find out the true scale of devastation for some time yet to come.
